Holiday Travel Essentials

Holiday travel often includes visiting loved ones or taking a vacation. Whether you’re seeking a winter wonderland or escaping subzero temperatures, follow these travel tips for a healthy and safe holiday travel season.

Before Your Travel

Research your destination to see what vaccinations or medications you may need and what diseases or health risks are a concern at your destination.

Prepare a travel health kit with items you may need, especially those items that may be difficult to find at your destination. Include prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines. Take enough to last your entire trip, plus extra in case of travel delays.

During Your Travel

Choose safe transportation. If driving, always put on a seatbelt. Young children should ride in car seats with the door, window, and child safety locks enabled. Also, always use the handbrake when parking in sloped areas. Be alert when crossing the street. Protect yourself from cold or very hot weather.

For Cold Weather Travel, Consider the Following:

People get cold injuries due to accidents, severe unforeseen weather, or inadequate planning. To prevent cold injuries (including Hypothermia and Frostbite), please take the following steps:

  • Wear several loose layers of light warm clothing.
  • Wear a coat or jacket.
  • Wear mittens, hats, and scarves.
  • In wet situations, put on waterproof shoes with good traction.
  • Use personal flotation devices. They are lifesaving if someone becomes unable to swim due to injury or the cold.
  • Stay dry because our bodies lose heat quickly when it is wet.
  • When active, take off extra layers of clothing when you feel too warm or begin to sweat.
  • Be mindful of shivering. It is a sign that you need to get warm.

After Your Travel

If you have any health concerns after travel, promptly contact your doctor.

Non-Travel Holiday Essentials

If enjoying the holidays at home without traveling is the plan, you will need a few things to make it safe and healthy. These essentials are functional and ready for any scenario you may face while on holiday.

Water

The human body must be well hydrated. Remember to drink water. You can make it fun by adding ice cubes made from berries and herbs.

Stick to Whole Foods

Whole foods should make up the majority of your diet. Most of your meals should have quality protein, healthy fats, and plenty of vegetables so that you stay well-nourished and have a healthy immune system. Puddings are healthy, light, and great-tasting sweet options. And festive fruit bowls are good choices. Most unprocessed foods promote a healthy immune system. Fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and healthy fats all help keep you and your immune system healthy. However, Puddings are healthy, light, and great-tasting sweet options. And festive fruit bowls are good choices.

Support Your Gut

The healthier your gut, the more it can tolerate stress. Support your tummy and overall health daily by including probiotics, either with a supplement or fermented food like yogurt.

Rest

Keeping yourself healthy over Christmas is not just about the food you eat. Some of us will have late nights while attending different events and parties throughout the holiday. Therefore, it is good to catch up on sleep when you can.

Spend Some Time Outdoors

Go outdoors if the weather permits. Time outdoors is a source of vitamin D and is one of the best ways to replenish and relieve stress.

Connect!

Quality time with family and friends is more valuable than any gift you can buy. This season is an excellent time to create a family tradition. For example, pick a movie to watch together on Christmas Eve. Time spent together as a family benefits everyone!

Now that you know all about the pubic health essentials you need, it is time to enjoy your holidays!
